Family violence & sexual violence reporting guidelines

The sexual violence media reporting guidelines were created in 2013 by TOAH-NNEST (Te Ohaakii a Hine National Network Ending Sexual Violence Together). The family violence media reporting guidelines were created in 2008 by the It’s not OK campaign based at MSD.

These have been updated by a group of subject matter experts (see guidelines for full list of expert contributors) to help journalists access accurate and up-to-date information and resources when reporting on the sensitive issues of family violence and sexual violence.

Industry guidelines that influence reporting need to be by media, for media. However, this project recognises the importance of the inclusion of expert voices and knowledge from across the sector, including media, academics, NGOs and community organisations, and government organisations (MoJ, MSD and Police).
